Xavier Lázaro concluded the first day of the 2020 Portugal Karting Cup on a highly positive note by winning the first qualifying heat of the Initiation category this afternoon at the Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve (KIA).
The reigning champion of the category arrived at the Algarve circuit with aspirations of securing victory in this competition, but was ultimately surpassed by Martim Gomes in the timed practice sessions held during the morning. Starting from the 2nd position for the race, the only one for Initiation today, Xavier Lázaro fiercely contested the victory with Martim Gomes throughout the race. Martim Gomes capitalized on a better engine in the faster sections of the track, while Lázaro was more efficient in the twisty parts of the circuit. In the end, the young driver from Várzea de Sintra leveraged his greater experience in the category to take the lead and defend the position until the checkered flag.
"I had to be at my best, Martim was a worthy opponent", Xavier Lázaro said at the end of the race. "Tomorrow the races are going to be tough, but I will once again give my best".
