The fourth and penultimate round of the Champions Of The Future brought the world's leading karting talents to the Åsum Ring in Kristianstad, Sweden. Organised by RGMMC, the event once again featured one of the strongest junior fields in international karting while also serving as the final preparation before next week's Mondokart.com FIA Karting European Championship, which will take place on the same circuit.
It was also a particularly significant weekend for Xavier Lázaro. The 12-year-old Portuguese driver made his official debut with Parolin Motorsport, one of the most prestigious factory teams in world karting, taking on an ultra-competitive field of 86 drivers in the OKJ category.
From the very first official practice sessions, Xavier immediately felt capable of fighting at the front. His adaptation to the new team was almost instantaneous and the pace he displayed throughout practice confirmed that he had every ingredient needed to challenge for top positions. However, one familiar issue once again proved decisive — Qualifying — an area that has continued to limit his results in both the Champions Of The Future and the Mondokart.com FIA Karting European Championship.
Qualifying once again shapes the entire weekend
Xavier's best lap of 51.328 seconds placed him only 61st overall and 21st within his qualifying group. Although the starting position was far from ideal, the gap to pole position was less than six tenths of a second, with Daniel Miron Lorente (Fusion Motorsport/KR/Iame/Maxxis) securing the fastest time of 50.790 seconds.
At this level of competition, where the performance gap between drivers is incredibly small, a difficult Qualifying session inevitably dictates the rest of the weekend. Starting 21st in every Heat meant Xavier had to fight his way through the field each time, where every overtake requires commitment, precision and often a little luck to avoid racing incidents.
Five Heats spent fighting through the field
The opening Heat perfectly illustrated the true pace of the young Portuguese driver. Over just ten laps, Xavier gained ten positions to finish in an outstanding 11th place after an impressive recovery drive. He also recorded the second fastest lap of the race, further underlining the competitiveness he had shown throughout the weekend.
The remaining Heats proved considerably more demanding. With only 36 places available in the Final from a field of 86 drivers, every position was fiercely contested and every overtaking attempt involved significant risk.
In Heat 2, while pushing aggressively to gain positions during the opening laps, Xavier completed a bold overtaking move that forced another driver slightly off the circuit. As that driver attempted to rejoin, contact occurred with another competitor, leading the Stewards to issue the Portuguese driver a five-second penalty. After the penalty was applied, he was classified 19th, still two positions ahead of where he had started.
Heat 3 produced a remarkably similar outcome. Another close battle involving the same rival resulted in a second five-second penalty, leaving Xavier classified 26th at the finish.
The final two Heats once again highlighted his race pace. In Heat 4 he climbed from 21st to 16th, before gaining another four places in Heat 5 to finish 17th, once more demonstrating that he possessed the speed to move forward whenever opportunities arose.
Super Heat ends before it truly begins
The combined Heat results secured Xavier a place in Super Heat B, although qualification for the Final had already become mathematically impossible.
The 13-lap race was effectively over at the very first corner. Moments after the start, the Portuguese youngster was heavily struck by another driver at Turn 1 of the Åsum Ring, causing irreparable damage to his Parolin kart and forcing an immediate retirement, bringing his official debut with the Italian factory team to an unfortunate conclusion.
Renewed competitiveness provides real encouragement
Although the final results did not reflect the pace he consistently demonstrated throughout the weekend, Xavier Lázaro leaves Sweden with several highly encouraging positives.
The speed shown from the opening practice sessions, his impressive recovery drives throughout the Heats and his ability to match the lap times of the leading drivers confirmed that his adaptation to Parolin Motorsport has been considerably quicker than expected.
The main challenge now remains Qualifying. A stronger performance over a single lap would allow the Portuguese driver to start much further up the grid in the Heats, reducing the need for major recoveries and significantly increasing his chances of fighting for the front positions.
With the Mondokart.com FIA Karting European Championship taking place next week at the very same Kristianstad circuit, Xavier Lázaro will have an immediate opportunity to convert the promising pace shown this weekend into the results his true performance deserves.
