Xavier Lázaro achieved his first podium today in the X30 Mini category during a stage of the Toyota Portuguese Karting Championship. The accomplishment took place in the opening round of the competition, held this weekend at the Kartódromo Internacional de Viana do Castelo, organized by the Clube Automóvel do Minho.
After being present in competition at the Minho karting track three weeks ago for the Portuguese Open, Xavier Lázaro, from Várzea de Sintra, returned to the track near Viana do Castelo to once again demonstrate a high level of skill. This time, he translated his good performances into results. Behind the wheel of the DR X30 Mini, Xavier Lázaro was able to materialize his good pace, securing the third position in Sunday's race.
“De Início Correu Tudo Mal”
The weekend started negatively for Xavier Lázaro's aspirations for a good result in the opening stage of the championship. On Saturday, after the young eight-year-old stood out in the morning's free practices, he was hindered in the qualifying due to a mechanical issue that prevented him from performing at his best. The chain guard on his kart broke, prompting the display of the mechanical failure flag, and the DR driver was forced to return to the pits without setting any time. As a consequence, he ended up with the last position in the session.
Tudo ficou ainda pior quando, na 1ª Manga de Qualificação, Xavier Lázaro, saindo de último acabou por se atrasar no início da prova, na consequência de uma tentativa falhada de ultrapassagem a um adversário. O piloto perdeu o ‘comboio’ do pelotão e não mais conseguiu estar em situação de poder subir posições, tendo que se contentar com o último lugar. Na Corrida 1 de sábado, Xavier Lázaro conseguiu ‘salvar’ um pouco o seu dia, vindo de último para terminar na sexta posição.
“De início correu tudo mal”, said Vasco Lázaro, Xavier's father, sounding disheartened. “Ele teve um problema no motor logo após entrar na pista para os cronometrados e não conseguiu fazer um bom tempo. É um pouco frustrante este azar, pois ele tem estado competitivo e na segunda sessão de treinos livres havia sido o mais rápido. Depois nas corridas, na primeira de novo não esteve feliz e atrasou-se irremediavelmente. Na última corrida do dia, fez o possível e foi sexto. Mas, tendo em conta o seu ritmo, não era este o resultado desejado”.
Sunday of Overcoming
Xavier Lázaro's final day in this first stage of the Portuguese Karting Championship Toyota started in a very negative way, as the driver from Várzea de Sintra struggled with a virus that made him feel very unwell. His discomfort was evident upon arriving at the karting track for the timed sessions. Despite the challenges, the driver took to the track, turning weaknesses into strengths to become the second fastest in the Qualifying, 0.447s behind the pole position holder.
“O Xavier passou a noite a vomitar, chegando hoje bem cansado e fraco ao kartódromo”Vasco Lázaro mentioned. “Não participou dos treinos livres e fez os cronometrados, até mesmo para cumprir com o regulamento, por isso lá foi e até esteve bem”.
In Qualifying Heat 2, Xavier Lázaro imposed his good pace, and even though physically weakened, he managed to be efficient and finish in second place, 1.978s behind the winner, Martim Marques.
Na Corrida 2, Xavier Lázaro perdeu duas posições no arranque, mas ainda que já algo fatigado foi atrás do ‘prejuízo’, conseguindo de novo chegar à segunda posição nos últimos instantes da corrida. No entanto, antes do agitar da bandeira de xadrez, viria a ser de novo superado, tendo que se contentar com o derradeiro lugar do pódio, atrás de Martim Marques e Diogo Caetano.
“Hoje foi um dia melhor para o Xavier, no que diz respeito à competição”Vasco Lázaro commented at the end. “Apesar de ele fisicamente não estar bem no dia de hoje, conseguiu superar-se para garantir o primeiro pódio na X30 Mini, algo que desejava muito. O Xavier deu hoje aqui uma grande prova da sua força, conseguindo superar as debilidades físicas para se impor na pista”.
