During last week, Xavier Lázaro was in Italy for a testing session at the South Garda Karting track in Lonato, initiating an international preparation plan aimed at his continuous development in the sport. At the age of seven, while taking his first steps in the X30 Mini category of the Portuguese Karting Championship, Xavier Lázaro will also travel to several tracks in Italy this year to adapt to driving the 60 Mini kart. Although still very young to compete in the international category, the young talent from Várzea de Sintra doesn't shy away from the opportunity to start learning new tracks behind the wheel of a kart he will soon compete with.
It was two days of testing, during which Xavier Lázaro intensely drove on the Lonato track behind the wheel of DR chassis, from the multiple World Champion, Danilo Rossi. Although in our country Xavier Lázaro is part of the Cabo Júnior Team (CJT), driving Kart Republic (KR) chassis, the choice of equipment for international preparation is currently entrusted to DR, which will oversee the performance of the Portuguese driver during the season. In this session, Xavier Lázaro was able to share the track with many other drivers, many of whom are official competitors in the most important competitions of the international 60 Mini calendar.
“Achámos por bem proporcionar ao ‘Xavi’ a possibilidade de durante o ano ir experimentando o ambiente internacional, ao mesmo tempo que o tentamos preparar o melhor possível para o futuro. A DR proporcionou-nos uma boa sessão e durante os dois dias fomos tratados de forma excelente e muito profissional”, said his father, Vasco Lázaro. “Aqui em Lonato, por ser uma pista com muita rodagem e utilização todo o ano, o Xavi vai experimentar sensações que dificilmente podem ser atualmente replicadas em Portugal, com a pista cheia de borracha e constantemente com muitos pilotos. Ao mesmo tempo, ele vai podendo estar próximo dos grandes nomes da modalidade a nível internacional e muitos deles andaram aqui nestes dois dias de testes”.
With the focus of these two days of work on giving miles to the young Portuguese driver, it was also possible to analyze and compare some benchmark times. “O kart com que o ‘Xavi’ testou aqui é naturalmente um pouco mais rápido que o utilizado em Portugal no CPK. Por isso, ele teve que se adaptar rapidamente e isso fez bem. Nesta fase o objetivo é totalmente dar-lhe rodagem e experiência, mas de qualquer forma foi bom ver que na análise de tempos, ele não está longe na comparação com os que sabemos foram obtidos recentemente por outros pilotos portugueses que já aqui andaram nesta categoria”, concluded Vasco Lázaro.

Havia muita borracha na pista o que fazia com que eu sentisse muito nos braços ao fim de algum tempo. Também choveu estes dias e na chuva tive algumas dificuldades em andar por causa da borracha na pista. Foi bom, porque aprendi muita coisa e também porque conheci pilotos que habitualmente correm no WSK e campeonatos CIK FIA. Mal posso esperar para voltar para mais sessões de testes. Esta pista é espetacular”.
