Xavier Lázaro is not having an easy weekend in the Portuguese Cup/Karting Festival, an event taking place at the International Karting Circuit of Leiria, organized by the Motor Sports Nucleus of that city (NDML). After losing his preferred engine during yesterday's official free practice session, the Várzea de Sintra driver had to settle for the 13th position in Qualifying. His lap time of 51.973s left him more than a second behind the pole position in the X30 Mini category.
“Estivemos aqui há alguns dias em testes e os indicadores deixavam -nos bastante otimistas para um bom resultado este fim de semana, mas com o problema que tivemos hoje no motor, fica tudo um pouco mais difícil”, this was stated yesterday by Vasco Lázaro, father of the Cabo Júnior Team driver.
With the damaged engine unable to be opened as it is sealed by the organization, Xavier Lázaro had to use a backup unit today, which obviously doesn't have the same level of performance. Nevertheless, the eight-year-old gave his best on the track, delivering strong performances in both qualifying heats.
In the 1st Qualifying Heat, starting from 13th, Xavier Lázaro showed determination on the track, managing to reach the 10th position. It's a commendable position considering the limitations in terms of performance, even though the team was able to extract the maximum from the Kart Republic engine. The driver clocked his best lap at 51.481s, almost three-tenths faster than the qualifying time.
Na 2ª Manga de Qualificação, Xavier Lázaro saiu de 10º, mas acabou por ser empurrado por um adversário ainda na primeira volta, caindo várias posições. O seu espírito combativo não se fez rogado e o piloto da Várzea de Sintra ‘fez pela vida’ para recuperar até ao 10º lugar, posição em que concluiu a prova. A sua melhor volta foi em 51.432s, um pouco melhor que na manga anterior.
“Ele está a fazer o melhor possível, tendo em conta o equipamento à disposição para estes dois dias”Vasco Lázaro said resignedly. “As coisas são o que são e o seu motor faz falta. Não sabemos ao certo o que aconteceu ao motor, mas talvez algum toque mais violento num corretor, causou danos e uma abrupta perda de performance. Ainda assim, com este motor de recurso, o ‘Xavi’ está muito combativo e com sede de corridas, o que é bastante positivo e mostra como está forte a sua mentalidade. Amanhã é outro dia e ele decerto fará o melhor com as condições que tem. De manhã, nos treinos livres, ainda vamos tentar evoluir um pouco mais o seu equipamento”, concluded the driver's father.
