The fourth and final round of the Mondokart.com FIA Karting European Championship, held at Sweden's Kristianstad circuit, marked another important milestone in Xavier Lázaro's young career. Competing against a field of 79 drivers in the OKJ category, the Portuguese youngster delivered his strongest performance since moving up to the class, claiming his first-ever European Championship heat victory and securing his maiden appearance in a championship Final. Although his race came to an abrupt end on the opening lap, the overall outcome confirmed the rapid progress he has made since joining Parolin Motorsport.
Pace confirmed in Qualifying from the very first flying lap
After taking valuable lessons from the previous round, Xavier approached Qualifying with a different strategy, and the results were immediately evident. Drawn in one of the strongest qualifying groups, the young Portuguese driver remained in the pits until the closing stages of the five-minute session, becoming the final competitor to leave the pit lane with less than two minutes remaining.
That strategy meant he only had time to complete one genuine flying lap before taking the chequered flag just two seconds before beginning what would have been a second attempt, one that looked likely to produce an even quicker time. Even so, his lap of 50.537 seconds secured second place in his group and sixth overall, just 0.035 seconds away from pole position.
More important than the final classification was the clear demonstration of pace. The Qualifying session confirmed that Xavier now possesses the speed to challenge at the front of the OKJ field, laying the foundations for an extremely competitive weekend.
First European heat victory confirms front-running potential
The opening Heat fully confirmed the promise shown in Qualifying. Starting from pole position, Xavier controlled the launch, held the lead into the first corner and immediately began pulling away from the chasing pack. Throughout the ten-lap race he never came under pressure, eventually crossing the finish line 1.721 seconds ahead of his Parolin Motorsport teammate Alexander Lazarus. It was the Portuguese driver's first victory in a FIA Karting European Championship Heat and also his maiden Heat win since stepping up to the OKJ category.
The remaining four Heats presented a very different challenge. On every occasion Xavier lined up on the outside of the front row, widely regarded as the least favourable starting position at Kristianstad. In Heat 2 he was caught up in several incidents after the start and, in addition to the positions lost on track, received a five-second penalty for front fairing infringement, dropping him to 11th place.
Heat 3 proved equally eventful. After being hit at least twice by Belgium's Antoine Venant, Xavier later became involved in another incident and was eventually disqualified from the race. Showing impressive maturity, he bounced back strongly in the final two Heats, finishing fifth in Heat 4 before producing another intelligent drive to secure sixth place in Heat 5, prioritising a strong starting position for the Super Heat.
Maiden European Championship Final ends an encouraging weekend
Starting tenth on the grid for Super Heat B, Xavier produced another composed performance against one of the strongest fields in international karting. Although he lost one position during the race, his 11th-place finish comfortably secured a place in the European Championship Final, a milestone he had been chasing since joining the OKJ category.
Unfortunately, the Final itself lasted little more than a few corners. Starting from 19th on the grid, the young Portuguese driver was collected on the opening lap by another kart returning to the racing line after a spin, leaving him with no opportunity to avoid a heavy collision. The impact caused significant damage to the rear axle of his Parolin/TM/Maxxis kart and forced his immediate retirement.
Despite the disappointing ending, Kristianstad will be remembered as one of the most encouraging weekends of Xavier Lázaro's season. His first FIA Karting European Championship Heat victory, his maiden appearance in a European Championship Final and, above all, the outstanding pace shown throughout the event confirmed that the Portuguese youngster continues to make excellent progress with Parolin Motorsport and is now firmly establishing himself as a genuine contender for front-running positions in the OKJ category.
